By the age of 3 years, over 80% of dogs and around 68% of cats have some degree of periodontal disease. The disease occurs when the tartar that accumulates on the teeth leads to bacterial growth under the gumline. This leads to gingivitis, loose teeth, broken teeth, bad breath, mouth pain, abscesses at the tooth root, excessive drooling, and the inability to eat/drink properly. The built-up bacteria then enters the bloodstream and spreads to the heart, liver, and kidneys, causing damage to these organs. That is why it is vital to have your pet’s teeth professionally cleaned at 1 year of age, then every year afterwards.
During the dental cleaning, we will assess the oral cavity for growths, lesions, and other abnormalities that we would otherwise not be able to see when your pet is awake.
Radiographs of the tooth roots and periodontal bone will allow us to recognize bone loss, tooth resorption, and root integrity. This will allow us to formulate the safest way to extract teeth that are loose or diseased. We will then scale and polish all teeth, just like our dentitis do for us.
The dental cleaning is performed under general anesthesia and is a safe procedure. The risk of periodontal disease and organ dysfunction caused by bacteria in the bloodstream is much greater than the risk of anesthesia.

I cannot express how amazing Ross Bridge Animal Hospital is! Today we laid our dog to rest. Dr. Rab, Andrea, and Brianna were so kind! They made this very uncomfortable and unfortunate time as pleasant as possible. We will use Ross Bridge Animal hospital forever! Thanks again for your compassion and being there!Posted on Google![]()

We’re not due for a vet visit quite yet, but the staff at the front is always friendly and very communicative. Sammy does an excellent job grooming our goldendoodle. Our girl comes home fluffy and happy. We will definitely keep bringing her here for grooms and when due for an annual checkup, will be scheduling that here as well! Our girl has been to doggy day care once, too, while we were moving in, and once again, came home happy pup that was able to run and play rather than be locked up all day!Posted on Google![]()
